Your elected and appointed officials have been working intensively for months gathering information on this critical issue, and now it is time for the public to act on that work. Oak Bluffs is hosting three community workshops over the coming months, and your input at these will set the path for the future of affordable housing in our Town. The lack of affordable housing has been an Island-wide issue for decades, but in recent years, the problem has reached crisis levels. Late last year, representatives from the six Island planning boards agreed on a series of steps that would lead to real results in combatting this issue. Every town would begin by creating a Housing Production Plan (HPP), which would be composed of an assessment of needs, goals, and strategies.
HPPs are not an invention of Martha’s Vineyard’s leaders. They are a crucial planning tool used throughout the State to guide affordable housing decisions at the local level. Proactive towns create HPPs. Reactive towns do not, and as a result, the citizens pass control of housing decisions to developers, the State, and regional planning authorities. Although Martha’s Vineyard is unique in having the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, there is little doubt that an HPP will provide townspeople with the greatest control over their housing future.
The Oak Bluffs Affordable Housing Committee, Planning Board and Selectmen have been working with the MVC to gather the information needed for productive discussions and decision making. We are now ready for the public to join us in answering the big questions of “how?”, “when?”, and “where?” Your input at these workshops will guide zoning and housing policy decisions, planning and spending for years to come. There are a lot of big questions that only you can answer. We look forward to seeing you there.
