For newer board members, this course addresses the history and purposes of zoning, adoption of zoning bylaws, variances and special permits, public hearing and voting requirements and other key procedural requirements.
Instructor Bob Ritchie, with decades of working on planning policy at the state and local levels, has been involved for at least a decade with trying to modernize the Massachusetts Zoning Enabling Act.
Proposed amendments to MGL, Chapter 40A (The Zoning Act) will be discussed at this workshop. Part of the discussion will highlight new zoning reform legislation: S 122, An act promoting the planning and development of sustainable communities, reforms planning, zoning, and permitting in Massachusetts in a balanced and regional way that diversifies the housing stock and increases housing options for residents.
